How Akhil Krishna founded Sustavarse to solve the 40–60% building energy waste problem

Founder & CEO, Sustavarse
The story of Sustavarse begins with an engineer who refused to accept the status quo. Akhil Krishna graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in thermal systems and HVAC design. For years, he worked on the technical side—designing chillers, optimizing airflow, calculating heat loads. He understood machines intimately.
But Akhil noticed something troubling. The most brilliant engineering solutions often never reached the buildings that needed them most. The disconnect wasn't technical—it was communicational. Engineers spoke in BTUs and coefficients; building owners spoke in budgets and timelines. Someone needed to bridge that gap.
"Someone with technical knowledge who knows how to sell is always at the top 1% in the game."
— Akhil Krishna, on his professional philosophy
So Akhil pivoted. He moved into business development and sales, learning the language of ROI, risk mitigation, and stakeholder management. He discovered that his engineering background wasn't a limitation in business—it was his greatest asset. While others sold products, he could explain exactly why a particular solution would work, how it would perform in India's challenging climate, and what kind of returns to expect.
During his corporate years, Akhil watched as the sustainability movement exploded. Solar panels appeared on rooftops across the country. Electric vehicles became mainstream talking points. Carbon neutrality became a boardroom buzzword. Yet something was missing from the conversation.
"Everyone was talking about solar and EVs. But HVAC—the system that consumes 40-60% of a building's energy—was being completely ignored. That's not sustainability. That's selective visibility."
— Akhil Krishna, on the market gap
HVAC systems. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning infrastructure that keeps hospitals operational, data centers running, offices comfortable, and malls functional. In India's tropical climate, these systems work overtime—and they consume staggering amounts of energy doing it.
Akhil saw the opportunity clearly: sustainable HVAC technologies existed globally. They were proven, effective, and delivered genuine ROI. But building owners in India didn't know about them. There was no one to bring these solutions to market, adapt them for local conditions, and guide clients through implementation.
The decision to leave his corporate career wasn't easy. But once Akhil recognized the scale of the problem—and his unique position to solve it—staying wasn't an option. He resigned, stepped into uncertainty, and began building what would become Sustavarse.
"We asked: Why are renewable and sustainable products so expensive? Is it something we canno't reach? These aren't just business questions—they're the foundation of everything we do at Sustavarse."
— Akhil Krishna, on founding principles
The name came from an unexpected moment of clarity. Days after resigning from his corporate position, Akhil was walking through the city, processing the magnitude of what he'd just done. No salary. No safety net. Just a conviction that the HVAC industry needed disruption.
That's when he saw it—a movie poster for Doctor Strange's "Multiverse of Madness." And in that moment, something clicked. The multiverse concept perfectly captured what he wanted to build:
"We're not just bringing one solution. We're bringing sustainable practices to MULTIPLE SECTORS, MULTIPLE BUILDING TYPES, with MULTIPLE TECHNOLOGIES. That's our multiverse of solutions."
— Akhil Krishna

Verse
Multiverse of Solutions
= Sustavarse
"Test of fire makes fine steel."
This ancient wisdom guides everything we do at Sustavarse. Every technology we recommend has been rigorously tested. Every solution has proven itself in real-world conditions. We don't sell promises—we deliver results that have already survived the test of fire.
Before recommending any solution to any client, we rigorously evaluate it through three fundamental questions:
We scour global markets to find the most advanced, proven solutions. If there's a better technology available anywhere in the world, we'll find it and bring it to you.
India's tropical climate demands specific solutions. What works in Europe or North America may fail here. We validate every technology for our unique environmental conditions.
The best technology means nothing if it doesn't deliver ROI. We ensure every recommendation comes with a clear financial case and payback within the warranty period.
In commercial buildings, HVAC systems consume 40-60% of total energy. It's the single largest energy expense—and the most overlooked.
There are thousands of consultants for solar panels and electric vehicles. Everyone's focused on these visible sustainability solutions.
But sustainable HVAC specialists? Almost none. The sector consuming the most energy has the fewest people working to fix it.
"Building owners aren't even aware that global sustainable HVAC technologies exist, work in India's tropical climate, are financially viable, and deliver ROI within warranty periods. That's the gap we fill."
